Willpower and Stamina

Willpower and stamina are traits for Anna's Fantasy FUDGE. As well as being used in dice rolls, they can be spent to put extra effort into tasks, or lost through exhaustion.

8.1 Willpower

Willpower represents the determination and mental reserves of the character. Willpower is not the same as intelligence - anyone can be stubborn. People with high willpower do not give up easily in the face of failure and are resistant to interrogation. Characters with low willpower are easily discouraged, may have short attention spans and be more prone to browbeating and social pressues.

8.11 Spending Willpower

A point of willpower may be used to reduce the difficulty of a roll by one. Obviously, not all circumstances are suitable for spending willpower points. In general, any situation where sustained mental effort is required (searching a library for information, staying attentive at a long boring banquet, memorising a long letter), or where the character must concentrate intensely for a brief time (remembering a forgotten name, solving a riddle) a point can be spent at the GM's discretion.

Willpower is also spent by Dream-Weavers, in order to fuel their magic.

8.12 Losing Willpower

Whenever the cheracter has been involved in mental exertion, the GM may rule that one or more points of willpower is lost. This may be in addition to any points the character has spent. In addition, willpower may be lost if the character is attempting to resist mental magic or suffers psychological trauma.

8.2 Stamina

Stamina represents the physical toughness of the character; their ability to carry on in the face of injury, illness and exhaustion. Characters with low stamina are easily exhausted, and may be more prone to sickness.

8.21 Spending Stamin

A point of stamina may be used to reduce the difficulty of a roll by one. Obviously, not all circumstances are suitable for spending stamin points. In general, any situation where sustained physical effort is required (climbing a high cliff, long-distance running, handling a boat in a storm), or where the character can give his all in a single exertion (heaving a fallen tree away from the path, smashing down a door, hauling a friend to safety over a cliff edge) a point can be spent at the GM's discretion.

8.22 Losing Stamina

Whenever the character has been involved in physical exertion, the GM may rule that one or more points of stamina is lost. This may be in addition to any points the character has spent. Also, characters may lost stamina as a result of factors such as illness, extreme weather or poisoning

8.3 Regaining Stamina and Willpower

Willpower and Stamina are regained whenever the character has a chance to rest. How quickly they are regained is up to the GM, but in a 'classic' fantasy setting, characters are usually able to bounce back from exhaustion relatively quickly. As a guideline, a good night's rest should restore character's to full points.

And exception to this is losses caused by illness, poisoning, magic, etc. In these cases, the loss will persist for as long a the cause is still active.

Anna's Fantasy FUDGE

These fantasy role-play rules are derived from the wonderful FUDGE system developed by Steffan O'Sullivan. This is FUDGE flavoured for a heroic fantasy style and I have trimmed and re-worked the FUDGE rules extensively, especially in the area of prescribing mechanics and stats. THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL FUDGE. The basic rules allow any game genre to be run with complete freedom, with more options and choices than the biggest chocolate shop. To get the true taste of FUDGE, you should get a copy of the original rules, widely available on the WWW, or from RPG shops. For more information and links try the FUDGE page of Grey Ghost Press, the publishers of FUDGE.
