The Six Planes

The Earth forms a kind of nexus where the other worlds meet and is a blend of each element. Humans do not have a home world other than Earth. The reason why is not known, although it is suggested by some that humanity originally inhabited the Life plane, but were expelled for some unspecified wrongdoing. The other sentient species are all represented on Earth, although the dominant race is humans. There are also several species of humanoids on Earth living mostly in the mountains, including the predominant ogres and goblins. The other races consider humanoids to be kin to humans, although many humans would hotly dispute this.

Travel between worlds is possible, though not easy. Gateways between worlds can often be found in the settlements of the other races. When entering another world, the form of the traveller changes. The form depends on the world entered. Elves, dwarfs etc suffer from this effect whilst they live on the Earth, where their forms are rather different to their native ones.

Plane of Fire - Salamanders

This is a little visited plane, and the Salamanders who make their home here are generally hostile to uninvited visitors. The Salamanders seem to be able to be able to revoke the shape-change of visitors here, resulting in a painful but quick death for intruders.

Those who have visited the plane and returned find it difficult to describe. There are vast clouds of searingly hot vapours, oceans of liquid magma, strange areas of semi-solid matter which vapourises into burning, exploding gases. And here and there, glimpsed through the heat hazes, vast caverns glittering with gems and strangely sculpted precious metals, which are supposed to be the homes of the Salamanders.

In other parts of the realm, there are rolling hills of ash covered in forests of fire, where strange creatures move amongst the heat haze. Some claim to have seen vast plains, crossed by rivers of lava, studded with magnificent cities rising like mulifaceted jewels. Around the cities strange fire-plants in burning fields are tended by mute, faceless humanoid creatures. Others dismiss these stories as the heat-addled delusions of those who have strayed too deep into this mysterious place.

The only truly safe way into the Plane is to be invited by a Salamander, as the creatures seem to have rigid codes of hospitality which absolutely guarantee the safety of guests. To be caught here uninvited is to risk instant death.

Plane of Earth - Dwarfs

This is one of the most understandable planes to human visitors, despite it's strange elemetal creatures. Most of the plane consists of vast tunnel systems, which in places move into or mirror the Deep Ways built in the World by the Dwarfs. There are also some parts 'above ground', but the sky is shrouded with mists.

The plane of Earth is the only plane where there is regular trade between those who live on the Plane and those who live in the World. Dwarfs love variety and new experiences and there are many things not found on the plane (such as pearls, wood, coal and distilled spirits) which can be traded by the Clans of the World.

The underground cities of the Dwarfs in the Plane of Earth are vast and magnificent beyond the imagination of most humans. Most of the cities seem to be formed out of living rock which has 'grown' according to the wishes of the dwarfen inhabitants.

Plane of Water - Dolphins

The Dolphins call the Plane of Water "The Arms of Typhon". As such, it is a beautiful and dangerous place. Much of the plane is made up of oceans, varying in temperature. They are inhabited by every conceiveable species of fish from the World and also by fantastic and even monstrous creatures of it's own. Some of them have lifespans measured in centuries and can be a valuable source of information (provided that questioner isn't eaten first.)

However, there are also rivers, lakes and shorelines. The land which bounds these features is strangely insubstantial, disappearing into mist after only a few yards. Since most forms taken by travellers to the Plane are purely aquatic, what the mists cover is mostly is unknown. A few attempted explorations are recorded in obscure mystic texts. Those who venture into the mists find that they lead eventually to new shorelines or occasionally the traveller simply finds themselves back underwater. This reflects the rather uncertain an changing nature of 'sea level' in this plane.

Dolphins living on their home plane are fully aquatic and can breath water. However, they are as nomadic as those who have travelled through the Gates. Dolphin groups seem to keep in touch mostly through Dream-Weaving. The best hope for travellers trying to find a specific person or destination in the shifting depths is to take a Dolphin guide. The areas which are most fixed are those around the Gates. As well as the Gates to the World, there are harder to find gates to the planes of Life, Earth and Air, although these are seldom used by the Dolphins. There are also a few Gates to the Dark plane of the Shades, which blacken and pollute the water around them.

A commonly noted feature of this plane is the difficulty of working magic here. The constantly shifting water washes away magic almost before it is cast. A further danger is that magic seems to act as a magnet for the wild, unpredictable Dragons of the plane.

Plane of Air - Elves

The Elves consider their home plane to be the embodiment of the Dream of Luinen. It certainly has many dream-like qualities, which make it confusing for visitors. Amid the towering clouds and clear spaces of sky can be found out-of-place stretches of forest tree-tops, mountain slopes, cliff faces, sunlit mountain pools and even wind-whipped moorlands and meadows. These features merge into the clouds around them, defying geography and often seeming to be suspended over thin air.

Pealry, mulitcoloured mists drift around the Plane of Air, sometimes in tiny patches, sometimes in great banks. The Elves say they are part of the Dream, made solid here. Skilled Dream-Weavers can solidify the ephemeral wisps, using them to craft whatever the Elves require.

The only consistant thing about the plane is the moon, which can always be seen bright in the sky, finding a gap through the thickest seeming clouds. If the moon disappears, it is a sure sign that a Gate to the plane of Endless Night is nearby. Such areas are shunned by the Elves, who sometimes enlist the aid of the Silver Dragons to destroy the features which have opened the Gate.

Unlike the Dolphins of the plane of Water, the Elves do build permenant settlements in the home plane. These are light and airy creations of crystal and silver which defy what little gravity seems to exist on this plane. They are home to many beautiful songbirds and huge eagles.

Plane of Life

This is a wild and dangerous plane, unkind to the unwary and those who believe that nature should bow to human superiority. The land is completely wild, having never been tamed by axe or plough and full of an incredible variety of creatures and plants.

Paradoxically, this is also the most ordered and 'logical' of the planes. It does indeed bear a great resemblance to the World, except in the profusion of it's wildlife. There is an unchanging rythm in the progression of seasons and climates. The animal (or half-human half-animal) forms taken on by many visitors reflect their personalities and can often prove to be overwhelming. Many who visit the Plane do not return.

Plane of Death - Shades

This plane is considered to be the 'opposition' plane of the plane of Life. However, it contains twisted mockeries of all the planes. Water here is either absent in the vast deserts or overwhelming the land in salty floods and storms. The air is often choked with poisons and bitter ashes. The earth cracks and shifts, making jagged icy mountains, and earthquakes are common on the arid plains. Volcanos dot the landscape and pits in the ground often lead into fiery chasms.

This is the only plane where visitors seldom change their form. Those who do are those close to the Darkness, who may take on shadow-form. The plane is populated by unfortunates who fell victim to the Shades and were lured here or who entered the Plane by accident or design and were trapped. Death here is meaningless and many of the pitiful, soulless zombies who slave under the direction of the Shades should long be dust.
