The Salamander are very seldom seen by humans, except those of the Salamander Penninsula. They require extreme temperatures to survive, considering anything less than liquid magma to be decidedly chillly. Their forms are hard to distinguish amid the heat shimmer and flame which surround them. However, on the beaches of the Salamander Penninsula are occasionally found lizard-like sculptures of hardened lava which are said to be the remains of unfortunate Salamanders who accidentaly emerged from a lava vein into the sea.

One thing which is known about Salamanders, at least those of the Penninsula, is that they are insatiably curious, especially about the doings of the cold-landers. They are willing to spend hours in conversation with any who can stand the heat of the lava flows, before the cold drives them back into their volcano homes. In exchange for news of the world's doings, they give the inhabitants of the Penninsula city-states gold and gems. What the Salamanders do with the information they gather, or why they are interested in the events of a world they cannot enter is not understood.
