Hunters names and motives

DS JANE SHAW - Bradford CID

Ambitious female D.S. She is interested in getting on in the police force. She (naturally) doesn't like the Freemasons. However, she still hopes that if she works hard and demonstrates her talent and enthusiasm she will get promoted anyway. She has read too many of the forces Equal Opportunites leaflets. If she gets any idea that the Freemasons are controlled by Vampires, she may decide that this is a wonderful opportunity to destroy Freemasonry by revealing this.

Unmarried. She had an affair with a married senior officer soon after she joined the force but has since broken off the relationship. It was from some of his unguarded comments that she began to really understand the extent of the Masons' influence. If her position gets really desperate then she might go to him for help, if she can think of nothing else. This will be a fatal mistake, as he is very definately part of Gilbert's information network and news of any suspicious enquiries will leak back to Gilbert quickly.

Jane is a tall, dark haired woman. She is 28 years old and has worked for the Police since leaving Bristol University with a degree in Sociology and Criminal Science.

Motivation

Jane Shaw sees the incident as a great opportunity. If she can prove the existence of vampires beyond all reasonable doubt, she believes that the men who run the Police would be unable to ignore her. She can either use the information to smash the masons or to guarantee her career. On the other hand, Jane is quite aware that she cannot afford to go off half-cocked. Because of this she will be extremely careful to cover up her work. It has occured to Jane that if vampires are at all like people and they manage to be so invisible then they must have control over the police and politicians. Her first task is to discover whether or not there is such a thing as a vampire society.

It was her good fortune that her initial compter queries attracted the attention of Alex Lloyd, a civilian working in the police computer department who was already suspicious about influences in the police department. He has given her an edge in the monitoring of vampire-related incidents and signs of police cover-up which she is determined to exploit to the full.

DC BOB LYONS - Bradford CID

Middle aged bloke who has always been in the police. Never really got anywhere. Is 'stuck' because he is no good at the politics required to get promotions. Married with three teenaged children who are causing him trouble. He suspects that his eldest son might be getting involved with drugs and that his wife is trying to hide this. However, Bob doesn't want to look too hard, in case he has to do something about it. His daughter wants to leave school at 16 and go to work with her older friend who has started a hairdressers. This is despite the fact that her teachers say she is really clever and could get some A-levels and go to university if she wanted to. His youngest son is alright, as far as he knows, but Bob is worried that his brother will lead him astray. The lad is a real football fan and wants to go to away matches on his own. Bob is worried some of his football friends might possibly be hooligans. All in all, the last thing he needs is to discover the existence of Vampires.

Motivation

Whilst Jane is highly motivated, Bob feels as if he has fallen into a nightmare. This is just another problem that he can't handle. Bob will go along the others unless he feels that he is in more danger by chasing vampires than by ignoring them. Bob will become increasingly committed to the hunt as time goes by. Although he is weak now, the more he learns the more he will see vampires as a potential threat to his family.

PC NICHOLA LOVETT - Bradford Police

Joined the police because she wanted to 'help people' but couldn't stand the idea of being a nurse. Besides, the money isn't bad really, certainly a lot better than her friends from school who are working in shops or factories. She is quite small and lightly built, although it's a bad idea to underestimate her. Her father insisted she learned Tae-Kwan-do (because "it's just not safe to walk the streets these days") and she still keeps it up. She's pretty good - brown belt. She is a Catholic, although she has been 'lapsing' a bit lately. Her faith is about to get a real boost.

After her encounter with the vampire, Nichola went to talk to her priest, Father Moley about it. By great good luck, an old friend of his had long ago joined a small and highly secretive Catholic sect devoted to the destruction of earthly manifestations of evil. In deed, his friend had even tried to persuade a rather sceptical Father Moley to join him. Whether Nichola had indeed seen a 'vampire', Father Mole'y didn't know. However, it seemed prudent to give her a contact number his friend had left at his last visit. And so Nichola, by almost divine good fortune, was put in touch with the Society of Leopold.

Motivation

Nicola is the other motivator in the group. Her flagging religous beliefs have been rekindled as never before. She sees all this as a very clear message that she must do something extraordinary to help others. Nicola is unlikely to give up unless convinced that this was a solitary incident. If this hunt collapses and she is still alive, she may well go on to join the Inquisition.

PC JOHN SCOTT - Bradford Police

Having parents with pretensions can really ruin your life. However much he insisted on 'John' somehow his real name, Jerome, always got out and caused trouble. After his father was made redundant and they had to move to the estate, it all got a lot worse, of course, and to make up for it, he started thumping people first. At 18, he had become an loud, aggressive, sexist lager lout, so joining the police was an obvious step. When he was put with Nicola on his 'probation', he was pretty annoyed (how was he going to make his mark if they spent the whole time comforting burglary victims and helping children cross the road?) Of course, he changed his mind a bit after he saw Nicola throwing those drunks out of that pub. In fact, he began to rather fancy her. However, he rightly believes that he thoroughly screwed his chances of getting off with her in the first few hours.

Motivation

John Scott is not convinced that he should be involved in all this. If it wasn't for the opportunity to impress Nicola and his belief in supporting his friends then he would happily forget all about the incident. John is very much the opposite of Bob. As time goes by, John will become less and less willing to take risks.

ALEX HIRST - Civilian Employee of Bradford Police

From the records department. Has had previous suspicions about records being altered. Hasn't told anyone because he's not sure what's up. The alterations are fairly obvious, once you start looking for them, so he suspects that whatever is behind it must be quite 'big'. He is involved in computerising the records, which gives him lots of opportunties to look at a wide assortment of stuff without anyone getting suspicious. Recent graduate who has had to take the job because he needs the money - a non-officer and therefore an outsider in the police station. This cuts him off somewhat from Gilbert's influence.

Motivation

Alex is extremely curious about vampires. He sees the whole thing as some sort of mental excercise. In many respects, it's all just an excuse for him to hack into the Police computer systems. Alex is flattered by Jane's interest in his abilities. He is extremely unlikely to betray the group by accident or if threatened. Similarly Alex cannot be bought off very easily. He already has what he wants; ie an adventure and a chance to be a heroic hacker! If threatened Alex is likely to resort to gross bullshit. It would take a very persistent questionner to be sure of his involvement.

As a group, the hunters have a long-term view of their goals. They want to find out as much as they can about Vampires in the city and will be cautious about direct attacks. Jane especially is interested in the Vampires' influence on mortal life, in particular the Police. In most circumstances, the hunters will prefer to further their long term goals rather than achieve a short-term victory. However, they will alwys act to preserve the life of innocent bystanders, unless to do so would cost them their own lives.
