Jeanette Winterton

Background

George Gallefant was not very old in kindred years when he found that human blood no longer truely satisfied him. He had been one of the first to get involved in the slave trade and perhaps his indifference to human suffering hastened his need for Kindred vitae. He visited Lady Anne and called in an old favour to create a new Childe. He had supported Anne during her assumption of the throne after the second world war and although she did not really trust him, Anne couldn't refuse his request.

George had put a lot of thought into the creation of his Childe. He wanted someone who would be malleable and subservient to his wishes and he thought he had found exactly the right woman in the receptionist of one of his many businesses. Jeanette was not to be a 'real' childe, so George kept her ignorant of Kindred life.

After a while, it began to irk him that Jeanette didn't 'earn her keep', so he presented her to Lady Anne and began to use her as his secretary. He found her a useful screen and a way of stratifying his associates. Those who were important enough had his personal number. Those who were not of sufficient note had to contact him through Jeanette. After all, it was what the girl was trained for.

Jeanette was obedient, but she also had a secret rash impulsive side to her nature. Towards the end of 1993, a new and very charming vampire began to seek a meeting with George. He said his name was Niccolo but she should call him Nick. What lovely eyes she had, was she a Romany? Why was she here, with such boring duties when she should be out dancing?

It was not long before Jeanette had spilled out the whole story of her Embrace and her subsequent life. Nicollo seemed very interested to hear of George's 'need' for her blood. He also promised that if she would help him, he would take her away from George and they would run away together.

In a whirl of excitement, Jeanette said yes. Under Nick's instructions, she photocopied some of George's files, gave him access to the computers and found phone numbers for him. She was never sure exactly what Nick was doing, but it hardly seemed any time at all before they were heading north, with a great deal of money which Nick seemed to have acquired from somewhere. She was relieved to be freed of Gallefant's attentions although disappointed that she had had to leave her nicest clothes behind. When they reached the fief of York, Nick said that they should probably lay low for a while, until her Sire stopped looking for them.

Jeanette liked Wakefield. Although it wasn't London, there were enough winebars and nightclubs for her to visit. They moved onto a Gypsy campsite and although the caravan was small, it allowed Jeanette to start building up her wardrobe again.

They hadn't been there long, when Nick brought home another vampire girl. At first, when he said that Domenique would be staying with them, Jeanette was wild with jealously. After a few days, she began to like Domenique in spite of herself. Although Nick and Domenique were reluctant to talk about it, it seemed that she had escaped from a cruel Sire, rather like Jeanette. Domenique also had a strength and independance which drew Jeanette like a magnet.

They visited nightclubs and went shopping together and eventually, Domenique suggested Jeanette might like to drink some of her blood. The first time, Jeanette was reluctant but not wanting to offend her new friend, she did as she was asked. After a few days of this incredibly intimacy, Jeanette realised how very much Domenique loved her and how much she loved her in return. Jeanette had always secretly worried that Nick would leave her but now she knew that Domenique would always be there to protect her.
