Background

Mahindra was a good, obedient girl. She followed her famlily's wishes and although she went to school, she knew that she was just filling time, learning how to cook and be a good wife for the husband who was waiting for her. On her 17th birthday, she was introduced to the husband her parents had chosen for her and they were married soon afterwards.

Married life was not as good as she had hoped, but Mahindra assumed that it was her fault if her husband stayed out late, or shouted at her. One night, he came home drunk again and demanded sex from her. When Mahindra locked herself in the bathroom to escape, he kicked the door down and attacked her with a knife. When she came round, her husband was lying dead on the floor, the knife deep in his throat. Although she called an ambulance at once, it was much too late.

In court she wept and was contrite, asking that she should be sent to prison as a just punishment for her wickedness. However, the court disagreed and she was sent to a 'secure hospital'. It was there, through the haze of drugs, that Kali first talked to her. Was Mahindra pleased with Kali, she asked, now that Kali had freed her from her husband? Now they could have a lot of fun together, once they had got out of the silly hospital.

But Mahindra was frightened by Kali. When she told the doctors about Kali, they said reassuring things and gave her more pills, but Kali's voice didn't go away. At first, Kali was angry that Mahindra has told the doctors about her but eventually, she offered to help. Mahindra didn't like answering the psychiatrists' questions, did she? They wanted to know painful, embarrasing things about her husband, about the accident with the knife. _Kali_ knew Mahindra had not meant to kill him. He had been an evil man, cruel like all men, who had hurt Mahindra very much. He had hurt Kali too. Why not let Kali talk to them instead?

Mahindra wasn't sure at first. It seemed cheating, dishonest somehow, but the drugs made her tired and eventually she agreed. Whatever Kali told the psychiatrists seemed to please them because soon they wanted her to go home for weekends. It seemed funny to Mahindra sometimes, that it was Kali who the psychiatrists liked so much when it was Kali who had killed her husband. In fact, it made her smile sometimes, thinking about it, which seemed to make the psychiatrists pleased again.

When she went home, Kali told her not to mention Kali's name to her parents. After all, Kali cautioned her, her father was a man too, and men could not be trusted really, whoever they were. Since Kali had been so nice to her, Mahindra did as she was asked. But it was hard to talk to her parents, without mentioning Kali, who had become so important to her, so she said little to them. Instead, she went out for walks by herself, which seemed to please Kali also. Kali always insisted that they take a knife, to protect them and once or twice, Mahindra thought she remembered meeting men in the park, who Kali asked to walk with them.

It was on one of these evening walks that Mahindra and Kali met their Sire. He was looking for a meal when he saw Kali concealing the body of a young man under some bushes. He decided to feed from her but Kali resisted his attack with furious hatred. Facinated by Kali's anger, he decided to give her new powers to mete out her revenge. However, he underestimated the power of the Beast he had unleashed. One night not long after her Embrace, Kali awoke before her Sire and pounded a stake through his heart as he slept. Since then, the pair have lived a double life, with Kali allowing Mahindra to the surface most of the time. Kali is gathering her powers, however and Mahindra's clinging dependance is beginning to annoy her.

Mahindra avoids other Kindred. Kali avoids most of the Elders, mostly because she knows that they hold her Clan in suspicion and contempt. However, she does know Josef and often trades information with him. She occsaionally hangs out with T'Lads - Diamond Charlie, Roger Strickson, James Cormier and David Witering. She enjoys their wild evenings out but is also on the look out for an opportunity to Diablerize one of them. Unfortuantely, she can't think of a way of doing so without being suspected.
